Detroit’s first full-length disc golf course to open on Belle Isle
One of Detroit’s tarnished jewels will be the home of a disc golf course.
Volunteers are installing 19 new disc golf baskets on the site of the old Belle Isle ball golf course, which closed in 2008.
The baskets were secured through private donations and gifted by the Michigan Disc Golf Organization
The disc golf course features holes winding through weeping willows, over water and through other hazards. Early last year, volunteers spent more than 500 hours removing overgrowth and trimming trees to create a challenging course on the island.
More than $20,000 has been raised to renovate and create the course, which is expected to open to the public on Monday.
Last year, more than 150 disc golfers took part in the second annual Battle at the Belle. Since the 2012 tournament, the course has hosted weekly leagues, with more than 50 players competing.
This year’s event will be held on Sunday, August 25th. It will get underway at 10:30 a.m. It is a C-tier Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned event.
