Detroit named a finalist to host ESPN’s X Games

April 30 2013 | no comments

ESPN has announced that Detroit is a finalist city to host the 2014, 2015 and 2016 North American X Games.

The other finalist cities are Austin, Texas; Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina.

The X Games features top athletes in action sports like rally car racing, skateboard, BMX and motocross.

The two men organizing Detroit’s effort to host the Summer X Games are Kevin Krease and Garret Kohler, who we honored as our Detroit 2020 Persons of the Week last Friday.

“Detroit is a front-runner in this race because it has a strong local community of support, an overflow of opportunity, and an energetic movement of young citizens striving to bring the event here, said Krease, who is the Founder & Director of Action Sports Detroit, LLC.

“The final months of the bid process are focused on building out a more detailed plan for the 3-day event, growing community awareness and excitement through local events, and exposing ESPN to our movement and vision by hosting them for an official site visit,” Krease said.

ESPN will announce the host city later this summer.
