Our Person of the Week Is A Big Brother
This is national mentoring month, so we thought it would be the perfect time to honor someone who’s helping to lead a young man in the right direction.
He’s a Big Brother. And he’s our Detroit 2020 person of the week.
Lawrence Robinson knows how important it is to have mentors in your life. Growing up, he had mentors help guide him.
Now, he’s trying to do the same for 14 year-old Tyler…Lawrence, who’s a senior at Wayne State University, was matched with Tyler through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit a year and a half ago.
A couple of times a month, they get together for a few hours to study.. have dinner..and talk…
“He can come to me and you know ask me any questions about school, girls, or whatever it is we want to talk about and it’s positive for him,” Robinson said.
“He talks to me about a whole bunch of stuff,” Tyler said.
The tutoring sessions in subjects like math have paid off. Tyler’s grades have gone up.
The two also go to events like Tigers and Lions games…and they’ve volunteered together at the Motor City Makeover.
Tyler says Lawrence has made a big impact on his life. “I don’t get into trouble as much as I used to,” he said.
“It’s changed my whole perspective about giving back and forming relationships and it’s a responsibility,” Robinson said.
We honor Lawrence Robinson as Detroit 2020’s Person of the Week.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has launched its 100 mentors in 100 days campaign. The goal is to meet the need for an increased number of mentors, particularly men. Supporters are asked to become menotors and/or recruit mentors and give dollars to offset costs for ongoing mentoring programs during the first 100 days of the year.
