Greg Monroe Is On A Mission
All this week, Detroit 2020 is showcasing athletes who give back to the community. One of them is the Pistons’ big man, Greg Monroe.
Monroe has a foundation to carry his mission forward.
On the court, Greg Monroe can light up a big arena. Off the court, he can light up a room.
Monroe brightened the day for patients at the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center. “I’m blessed to be in this position, so I don’t take it for granted and I try to do as much as I can,” Monroe said.
Standing 6 foot 11, Monroe is a gentle giant. On this day, he was joined by members of the Pistons dance team, and even the Mascot, Hooper.
Through fundraising projects, and the support of individuals and corporate donors, Monroe’s foundation helps kids, families and educators in his hometown of New Orleans, and in Detroit.
“When people spend their time and money to come and support you and watch you play, it’s only right that you do the same for them if they need any help,” Monroe said.
He knows how much visits like the one on this day can mean to the kids. “I don’t take it for granted and I try to talk with them, interact with them in the nicest way possible. Just ask a little bit of information about them. See how they’re doing today,” Monroe told Detroit 2020.
Monroe remembers what it was like meeting his childhood heroes. “As a kid growing up when I would see or meet professional players the joy I had was unexplainable,” he said.
And it’s clear…he’s making a difference. One child at a time.
