Person Of The Week: A Friendly Voice
People who need help with paying a utility bill, health care, or job placement can call the United Way 2-1-1 service.
And sometimes, the voice on the other end of the line of a follow-up call is that of a retired senior. She’s our Detroit 2020 Person of the Week.
After spending so many years helping others in her career, Glenda Burton wanted to do even more after she retired.
You see, Glenda was a nurse.
Now, she volunteers at the United Way 2-1-1 call center in Detroit, as a community care advocate….
“I always felt that there but for the grace of God it could be me needing help,” Burton said.
So Glenda thought she’d continue to help others. She makes sure the people who call 2-1-1 for information and resources, got the help the needed. And if they did, that’s her reward.
“It makes me feel very good, because to know that if I helped one person a day, or if the call I did make they said yes, I was helped…that’s more than enough for me,” Burton told Detroit 2020.
So we honor one of the friendly voices on the other end of the line at 2-1-1…Glenda Burton…our Detroit 2020 Person of the Week.
