One Detroit retail entrepreneur is a step closer to winning $50,000 to open a new business.

Earlier this summer we told you about the Hatch Detroit contest.  Since then, 260 potential business owners have submitted applications.

Vittoria Katanski, Executive Director of Hatch Detroit, told us, “Hatch Detroit is a retail initiative to bring new business to Detroit and it is based on a contest format so people actually vote and it gets the community and potential customers involved in what type of business will eventually be put in the city.”

You can go to the Hatch Detroit website and check out the ten-semifinalists.

They include:

Detroit River Sports – which would bring kayak rentals to the city.

Detroit Vegan Soul Café – for vegan food with a soul twist.

La Feria – a Spanish tapas wine bar

The winner will receive a $50,000 cash prize from Comerica Bank, but there will also be several  organizations that have offered free legal services, accounting services, design services.

Comerica contacted Hatch Detroit to get involved with this, the second annual contest.

Comerica Vice president of Business Banking, Lori Mazurek is excited about the semi-finalists, “What wonderful businesses they are.  I’m sure anyone that wins of the last ten is going to be successful and hopefully all of them get into Detroit in the near future.

Voting will continue through Monday, September 17, 2012.
