The Heart Of Clark Park

February 24 2012 | 2 comments

Ziggy Gonzalez helped create the Clark Park Coalition back in 1991 to save the Detroit gem, when it was closed due to the city’s financial crisis.

Clark Park and its recreation center remain a centerpiece of the Southwest Detroit community today.

Now thanks to Ziggy, who’s 81 years old, and other members of the Coalition, more than 1,200 kids take part in programs at the park every year. Activities include arts & crafts, baseball, ice hockey, ice skating, mentoring, soccer, and youth employment & training.

“I don’t think you can emphasize enough the importance of this park,” Gonzalez told Detroit 2020.

The Clark Park Coalition will hold its 20th Anniversary Celebration at Armando’s Restaurant on Friday, March 2nd, 2012.

It begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction.

Fair market value of a ticket is $15. The tax deductible portion is the remainder of your purchased ticket price.

On Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, the Clark Park 20th Anniversary Celebration Winter Carnival will be held at Clark Park, 1130 Clark Street in Detroit.

It runs from Noon to 5:30 p.m. and features food, outdoor games, music, skating, marshmallow roasting and more!

Ziggy, thank you so much for you and your brothers. I have played ball at this park when I worked at Caddilac Mtr. Co. 30 years ago. I didn’t even know the city had closed it because whenever I went there it was pretty clean and kept up. People need a place to unwind and kids need to play so Thanks so much for you and your brothers!

You’ve been doing a lot of good for a long time Mr. Gonzalez. I hope for your continued good health and well being so your good works can continue.
